An engaging and well-illustrated history of the covered bridges in New Hampshire, featuring historical photos of each bridge paired with color images.

The author partnered with bridgewrights, timber framers, bridge engineers, historical societies, town offices, libraries, state and national organizations, and community members to compile extensive histories of each bridge. There are over 60 authentic covered bridges in New Hampshire; 46 of which are over a century old. These bridges exist today solely because of the efforts of a small but powerful community who both recognized their significance and honored their tradition. These covered bridges are an integral part of the fabric of New Hampshire’s history, but each bridge has its own story to tell. Some have stood sentry over their waterways without incident; others have risen like a phoenix from the ashes after a tragedy took them down.

The covered bridges serve as touchstones, providing a link from here to there and from then to now. These are their stories.

About the Author
Kim Varney Chandler is a natural researcher, amateur genealogist, photographer, bird watcher, and dog lover. She is a two-time graduate of the University of New Hampshire (’91, ’96G), where her love of history began in Professor Charles Clark’s classroom in Horton Hall. But rather than boldly changing majors, she settled on a history minor instead. Her love of history has been nothing more than a hobby with which to annoy friends and family. Until now. When not immersed in the past, Kim works as a high school counselor and commits an inordinate amount of time to volunteer work. Kim is a life-long resident of New Hampshire, except for two stints living south of the Mason-Dixon. She lives in Hancock with her husband, Marshell, and Pemi, the hiking therapy dog.

Kim Varney Chandler has it covered
As a lifelong NH native, I was expecting a beautiful book of photos with brief descriptions of each bridge. What I received when I bought this book blew me away!

Kim Varney Chandler has re-defined how to blend beautiful photographs with the most thorough, in-depth research of each bridge, as well as stories that bring each bridge to life. What a treat to read! She has set the bar for current and future historians and I look forward to her next project!

Interesting and beautiful!
This book is thoroughly researched and well written. The photographs are beautiful and are fun to look at along with the older photos of the bridges. Having driven over many of these bridges while living most of my life in NH, I never knew they had such interesting backstories and histories. Now when I drive over one, I feel the history and appreciate knowing it's background. This book speaks well to both those who have little background in the subject as well as those who have been interested in the topic for years! The information is presented in an organized, entertaining and thoughtful way. I really appreciate how she explains how her interest grew and the personal touches she puts into the book.

Absolutely Beautiful Book!!
This book is stunning! The photographs capture the smallest details and beauty of these bridges. The new photographs, alongside the older photos of some of the bridges, really illustrate the history and stories that Kim has so thoroughly put together for every single bridge. I particularly like this book because whether you are curious about a particular bridge, are a covered bridge enthusiast, or would like to start visiting covered bridges, it speaks to everyone! I bought two additional copies to share in an office waiting area and it's the most picked up and read book on the table. Thank you, Kim Varney Chandler, for a beautiful tribute to these important historical bridges in our NH towns.

I grew up in New Hampshire and have always loved covered bridges. Although I enjoyed their beauty and architecture, I had no idea that each of these bridges had their own unique story. "Covered Bridges of New Hampshire" has captured both the beauty of these historical bridges as well as their compelling stories. I have purchased additional books for my family as I know this is a book that everyone will enjoy.
